(Big Round 2016)
Review of "Goin 'Home'" at Kathodik.com: http://www.kathodik.it/modules.php?name=Reviews&rop=showcontent&id=6357 Really nice and intriguing, this CD of the Big Round, which stars the pianist and composer Gay Pearson as lead an ensemble that includes sax, piano, bass, and sometimes flute and cello. The repertoire ranges from songs from Pearson to Chick Corea classics, Jerome Kern , Michel Camilo , to reminiscences of famous songs by Carole King and Sigmund Romberg. In the original compositions as well as in the reinterpretations of other songs, one seeks the search for a balance between spontaneity and intentionality: improvisations are in fact never failing, but always channeled into the flow of melodic variations, harmonic modulation, or not overwhelming rhythmic progression. The fluency of phrasing seems to be the distinctive figure of Pearson and her faithful and affectionate traveling companions, able to support so much the lyrical nature of certain songs as the vibrant energy charge of others. A balance (even in instrumentation) that is synonymous with vitality, and never ceases to surprise and fascinate.
